Sri Lanka's central mountains have recently been included as one of Unesco's World Heritage Sites, and the craggy, biodiverse Knuckles Range forms a key part of that recognition. This massif is home to pockets of rare montane and cloud forest, and offers fine hiking and birdwatching possibilities. The name 'Knuckles' derives from the mountains' profile, which looks like a closed fist. This rugged highland region remains relatively unknown to foreign visitors and is one of the best areas in the Hill Country to get off the beaten tourist path.

If you are coming here in order to hike then you’ll need to be well prepared. A knowledgable guide is virtually essential.

A guide for the high peaks is compulsory, and some serious wet-weather gear and leech protection are essential. For anything more ambitious than a couple of hours’ stroll around the foothills, you will need to be totally self-sufficient, with camping equipment and food.

The foothills of the Knuckles are covered in small villages and there are no restrictions on walking here. The high massif, though, is a protected zone and entrance is Rs 650. Tickets cannot be purchased at the gate itself, but will normally be obtained by your guide from a forestry department office.

You will be picked up and transferred to Knuckles Mountain range trailhead. 6.30 A.M - On arrival, a brief description of the route and the hike will be provided by your very own Nature Guide who knows the area intimately. The Forest Range supports a rich biological diversity with 128 species of birds, 20 species of amphibians, 53 species of reptiles, 15 fresh water species and 31 mammal species. During this trekking, you will have the opportunity to witness many of these species.  As it gets towards midday, you will stop en route for a hearty picnic lunch and then continue on to a hidden waterfall where you will get an opportunity to have a bath in the crystal –albeit slightly chilly – water.1.15 P.M - Start Climbing down with your guide. You will have another chance of photographing the breathtaking views through the mountains.  5.30 P.M - Meet your driver who will take you back to the hotel.
